What Products to Sell from Home? Here are Ways to Find Out
How do you find the best products to sell online? You start by finding what is popular, and in demand.
Here are some shortcuts you can use to do so, quick ways to find internet niche markets and products to sell.
EBay: go to
ebay.com
(right-click to open link in new window). At the top right of the page, under the Sell tab, select What's Hot. This brings you to a page showing a long list of what's in demand, and hot products for which demand outstrips supply.
Paypal: go to paypal.com. Click on the Products & Services tab. At the bottom of the Products & Services page, click on the Shops link. This will bring you to a page with all websites that accept Paypal, listed according to their category in a column on the left.
Click on the category of the product you are looking into. Paypal will list the top shops in that category, sorted according to volume of sales made.
Let's say you're thinking of selling posters. You click on the Antiques & Art category and find that the top listing is a poster company that has made over 153,000 sales through Paypal. There's another one selling vintage movie posters with over 10,000 sales.
The figures are rather encouraging. So posters could be one of the products to sell from home. You can test other possibilities this way.
Amazon: best known for its books, but also sells other products like movies, games, computers, toys, jewelry, tools. Go to
amazon.com
. Shop All Departments (on the left of the page) lists categories which reflect what people are buying on the internet. To find what items sell best, go to the product category you have in mind, select the sub-category, then click on the Best Sellers or Top Sellers tab.
Let's say you're thinking of selling baby items. Select Toys, Kids & Baby > Baby. That will bring you to the Baby items page, at the top of which you will find a Top Sellers tab. Click on that.
At the time of writing, the top 3 sellers were a foldable play yard, a turtle-shaped night light, and a 2-bottle sterilizer! Hmmm... looks like practical stuff do well. From that page, you can go straight to look at best sellers for other product categories.
Google: go to groups.google.com (right-click and open link in new window). Type in the name of the product you're thinking of into the search box. For instance: Oolong Tea. The search result will show the number of news groups talking about it.
At the time of writing, this was 102,000 for oolong tea. Which seems to indicate a fair bit of interest in this product. You can fine-tune by going into some of the postings to see the type of interest and gauge demand from them.
This method, looking at news groups, is useful not just for finding products to sell from home, but is also a good method for checking niche areas or topics for which you want to sell info-products, or to create content or information websites on.
