Before starting an online business you need to find internet business ideas, niche markets, that are profitable
The key to profitable business ideas, is to find internet niche markets.
That means identifying a product or service which has a group of people seeking it.
Peter Daniels, best-selling author, real estate magnate, and authority on personal development, said it well:
"Before you sell any product, you need to know if there's a market for it -- and exactly how to sell the product to that market."
Before he wrote a word of any of his books, he knew who would buy it. He often pre-sold over a hundred thousand copies of a book before he was halfway through producing it!
The reverse is true of internet business ideas that fail. They fall in love with a niche or product, spend time and money to develop or produce it, and only after that, discover that there might just not be a market for it.
How do you avoid that?
Find Out What People Want
There're a few ways to find out what people want. One is to find out what people are searching for online. Another is to ask them, using surveys. The 3rd is to tap on research already done by big successful companies.
The first 2 methods can give you market information to a great level of detail, which you don't need right now. They are not hard to do, though slightly tedious, and we will discuss them later when appropriate.
For the present, you will just need a rough idea of what niche or product area to target. To do that, just use the 3rd method, which is a short-cut to finding ideas for hot niche markets instantly.
Here's how. To find products to sell from home, look at the categories on eBay or Paypal or Amazon. Each is a market for products. Then increase your competitiveness by looking for sub-markets, niches within it, which are the most popular.
In general, the best products to sell from home, that sell well on the web are those that take advantage of the convenience of the internet. The kind of things you would not find at the corner store.
Most products sold by mail order or catalog do well. People tend to buy only items that don't cost so much to ship that any price competitiveness is negated. High shipping cost is the one factor that discourages online buying more than even credit card security.
Other home business ideas include providing or selling information to people, i.e. be an infopreneur. Find niche markets looking for information, and offer a solution. How?
One way is to look for topics that generate a lot of discussion in forums or newsgroups on the internet. Go to groups.google.com (right-click to open link in new window). Type in your topic. Let's say: Wedding Favors. The search result will show the number of news groups mentioning it. (Quite a lot actually: over a million.)
That will tell you whether there is a high interest in the topic. Delving into the postings will tell you the questions being asked, the problems needing a solution, and perhaps help you locate internet business ideas that are promising.
Another way is look at www.magazines.com or similar websites, or head to your nearest bookstore or library, and see what books and magazines are popular. Magazines which sell regularly with strong readerships indicate proven profitable markets.
Then align yourself to your market by picking a topic for which you have an affinity, a passion. Some niche area you know a lot about, or which you will enjoy learning about. It could be landscape-gardening, or hair styles, or scuba-diving, or baby-care, or construction project management.
Isn't it said, “We know that which we love, and we love that which we know”? Pick something you love, and creating your business will not only be easier... it'll be fun!
Be or become an expert in that area, and market it, either by creating info products to sell, or using your expertise to recommend affiliate products, or by building a content-rich website to sell leads and advertising.
Finding internet business ideas with market demand is, however, only one side of the equation to finding a niche market. The other side is the supply, your competition.
Later we'll discuss how to sift through the shortlisted home business ideas, to find a niche market that has a lower supply compared to demand, so that there's less competition and a greater chance of success.
However, having the best products, the best internet business ideas, in the hottest markets is of no use, if nobody sees it. We therefore need to get people who are interested in your niche or product, to come to you.
