Step 3. Build a Website

Want to Know How to Build a Website?
Here is a Tutorial on How to Make a Web Site

Register Domain Name

Got your domain name and web host? Let's now proceed to the interesting part, to build your own website!

(If you came in directly to this page, you might want to go to Register Domain and Website Hosting to see how to do those steps first.)

This step, where you actually build a website, is where a fair bit of work needs to be done. You can either make your own website, or outsource part of it to a web designer.

There are 5 sub-steps involved, listed below. Even if you outsource, it is a good idea to acquaint yourself with the process needed to build a website, so that you are in a position to specify what you want, and get it.

Do glance through to the end of this list to get an overview of the whole website building process first, before going into any of the details.

Here are the sub-steps you need to take, to make your own website. (Skip any that don't apply in your case, or if you already know about it.)

  1. Determine what type of website yours is. See Types of Websites for a list of the common ones.

  2. The above will determine the form and content of your website. See Website Content for the type of content you would need to put on your web pages.

  3. If your website is meant to get traffic from search engines like MSN, Google, or Yahoo, or to get visitors to buy, then you need to find out what words or phrases (keywords / keyphrases) your would-be visitors use to search on for your selected niche area or product. You need to know this so you can put those same words or phrases into your web pages in order to get found by the search engines.

Even if you don't intend to get traffic from search engines, it is still a good idea to do this step, to determine whether there is indeed a strong enough demand for your niche or product. It will also help you see whether there might not be better demand in a sub-niche or a variation of your theme.

See the Niche Marketing Research page for how you do this.

  4. Knowing demand is just one side of the coin. You also need to know what the supply, the competition, that you face for your selected niche or product, is like; whether there is so much competition that it's not viable to pursue it. Whether you need to find a sub-niche or variation that has much less competition. See Find Niche Supply for how to do this.

  5. And finally, you make your own website by building the web pages of which your website is comprised. See Make a Website.
